My full name is John Samuel Young III, MD, but most people know me as Sam.
I am a residency trained Family Practitioner (MD) with 30 years primary care experience in inpatient and outpatient medicine. Much of my early professional career was spent as an active duty US Army physician, learning firsthand the many strengths and weakness of conventional medicine. Rising to the rank of Colonel, I served in numerous clinical, teaching, and leadership positions on active duty, including a combat assignment as a medical company commander in the First Armor Division during the Gulf War. During my military career I was honored to receive a number of military awards including the Legion of Merit and a Bronze Star.
Since my military retirement in 2001, my practice has focused on true disease prevention through appropriate lifestyle choices. My interest in complementary and integrative medicine during this period has further focused on the prevention of obesity and chronic disease through low glycemic nutrition, moderate exercise, and medical evidence based use of optimal dose vitamins, minerals and plant based antioxidants. My health recommendations are based on current medical research and peer reviewed medical literature involving these topics.
Additionally, I am a passionate advocate for community based health initiatives. My military retirement has allowed me to be an active member of several local and national organizations focusing on the prevention of childhood obesity, environmental health, and mental health issues. One such group is the Healthy Savannah Initiative, a Chatham County wide partnership of school, business, professional, and neighborhood volunteers creating grassroots support for the development of a healthier community. I enjoy speaking in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida on medical evidence based natural health topics and have an active medical license in Georgia. I practice as a complementary and nutritional medicine consultant, and as a collaborating physician in a Georgia wound care clinic, and am a proud corporate member of the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).
